I'm thinking something like
$currentSubscriptionPopupContent = $this->SubscriptionPopupContent()->find('ID', $contentIdFromUrl); (there is probably a better way)

I would agree, that looking where the session is stored is a key thing, but
/var/lib/php is not a given....
I'm not sure about
/var/lib/session. Depending on the installation, it might be in a completely different path
You can also confirm where Sessions are being written to on Prod by checking
session.save_path in your
php.ini file (or running
php -i | grep session from CLI)
