You can omit it, but it means the mailto: link will redirect inside the current window, leaving the user to wonder why they're viewing a blank screen. If you target="_blank" instead, it will open a new tab/browser window

Many moons ago, some websites were hosted inside iframes. _top refers to the top-most window, and instructs the hyperlink to open in the top-most frame

sorry in advance for idiotic non-silverstripe question…. BUT…. I need to make a link in a template that is one of those ones you can click on to write an email to someone. According to w3schools website, it needs to be <a href="<mailto:[email protected]?Subject=Hello%20again>" target="_top">Send Mail</a> what does the target="_top" bit do????
