you can pick your own client. sure there are a lot of ugly clients, and some really difficult ones

one downside of IRC that I see is persistent log/chat history

though there are several solutions for that. either run a bouncer, run a client on a remote that is always up and now there are even some so called "cloud" clients

well you can go and configure and try to find nice clients for irc or use slack

well, maybe slack is a good chat software, I honestly can't judge it just yet. but just the fact that it's not open is a serious concern to me

don't get me wrong, I am not a religious open source fanatic. but for something as crucial as the base of communication I use for a company or a community, open source really is the best way to go in most cases
