this one also knows we aren't dumb - they said that a particular feature wasn't possible in the new silverstripe 4 so we emailed them a code snippet to include which made it work!!! (the "owns" thing to get images auto-published when the page is published). & given we pay per hour we would be very dumb to mess it up so that we have to pay loads to fix it!!!

Hels

yeah, but we have been burned once before. A developer just dropped us with no notice period after being very un-responsive over several months and it then took a good 3-4 more months of pushing to get the passwords sent across to the new developer we hired

I haven't bothered looking into it tbh. We have multiple droplets for different sites (all identical code but different databases) for different countries. But I don't get involved - they are made and maintained by a professional developer and we don't even have the passwords for them. Something else that makes me nervous but at the end of the day it isn't my organisation or money that's at risk so I am staying out of it!!

Hels

thats why I mentioned GDPR-safe in my criteria above!! It does make me a little nervous....

Hels

it could be that we have a combination of digital ocean snapshots & something custom the developper does for us, but we are not actually clear on what really happens (significant language & time zone barrier!!).

Hels

don't think so. we seem to have a ridiculous level of backups and that is why we are thinking about it. there is definitely something that is hourly which seems overkill for us outside our main event uploading & ticket sales periods.

Hels

If you come up with a good, easy, cheap, GDPR-safe method I would be interested to hear it!

Hels

We have been looking at the backing up process for our big website. We currently have the snapshots that Digital Ocean provides - supposedly they are click to restore solution but luckily we have never had to test it out yet!! [quickly touching all wooden items in the office....]

Hels

Thanks so much for your advice! I think this is definitely one of those areas where my little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing & leads to mass paranoia!!!

Hels

Oh OK I'll download it quick then! There are 2 such files & there is most probably personal data in the one that is clearly an sql export!!!
