Someone from Silverstripe needs to tell the university how to make 1 simple integrated system instead of buying all these separate commercial systems that can't link into each other Please please please.....!!

I have been given an outlook exchange distribution list to manage, so that I can send important emails to a certain type of student. My understanding was that I would be able to populate it automatically using an LDAP group (not sure if that's a technical term you will know or an internal term!!) that was itself auto-populated from the student records system. But nooooo, I am way too naive!! I have to manually enter all the (~1000) email addresses after looking up each student individually by name. & then remove those who graduate and add the new ones each year!! & don't forget those who start & finish out of sync with the academic year, or go on sick/maternity leave 🤣 its a wonder I haven't exploded!

It probably doesn't help much, but the way people where I work do mass communication emailing (internal), is get a free personal mailchimp account, make the email in mailchimp, send it to themselves, then forward the email to the mailing list which they copy/paste from excel into the "To" box in outlook 🤣 All because there is no data processing agreement with mailchimp. But all internal email addresses are publically available on the website and there is legal basis for sending the emails under gdpr, just no provision of mailchimp!!! gdpr (or more accurately, peoples panic and general mis-understanding over gdpr) has a lot to answer for!!! 🤣

and a high value for your customer since my "customer" is me it will be extremely high value!!!

thanks for all the suggestions @wmk & @nightjarnz I'll certainly have a go at something now I know it's not a totally ridiculous idea

I basically want something totally hands off. the print-and-rescan procedure was a nightmare. & the finder method, or dragging thumbnails in preview is still too dangerous (human error possibilities)

I thought imagick was essential for silverstripe? I definitely had to install it...

right now I have to manually do it. which is ok (but boring!) when I have the laptop computer since finder lets me select seeral pdfs then right click to merge. But on the proper work computer (desktop) it is awful - last week we had to resort to actually printing all the files onto real paper, then re-scanning them using the printer's scanner and receiving them by email. That did not make me happy!!!

separately at work I have been asked to make a proof of concept online system for managing some records - which I would only be able to do using silverstripe as that is all i know! To do that I would need to negotiate an account on the LAMP system plus a mysql account so I thought that if I can get that approved I might as well make the most of it and use it for other things that make my life easier too!!
