It's similar! There's older guides to cover El Capitan. I had an older computer until recently that had the same issue

If you follow the above guide, all of your websites have their own local domain name, so you don't bother with localhost at all

My main complaint about MAMP is that it starts with a single server with no virtualhosts by default, so you end up resorting to the setup you described: dumping the project into a directory in the Docroot, so you end up with http://localhost/my-project

Fair enough. I teach a developer course and instruct people how to set it up before teaching Silverstripe. I'm a bit biased but no complaints so far 🙂

I know it's a matter of preference but I think starting there you would get set up faster. You could also consider something like Docker or Vagrant
