Introducing the new Silverstripe logos and brand family

Over the years, as our products and services have evolved to meet the changing needs of our customers, our brand has evolved, too. Today, we’re excited to unveil the new Silverstripe brand family and logos with a bright, bolder, and simpler look.

We’re seeking feedback from Content Managers and those users who are frequently in the CMS to learn more about your thoughts on workflows/tools you require to work collaboratively. If you’re a Developer, please feel free to extent this to Content Managers that you may be working with! The survey should take no longer than 10 minutes of your time. Thanks we appreciate your input! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeI_QTCsH4Q8SjYbfBldm7WinHsKptnrxQpvtSb26pL3Gwb5g/viewform?usp=sf_link

Yeah, this was my work around adding the new CMS help menu: https://github.com/silverstripe/silverstripe-admin/pull/615 if this is something that people would like to see make a come back when the menu isn't collapsed, we can take a look 🙂 A few things we were trying to resolve was that the SilverStripe logo (if unchanged) and the site name were too close to the point where it could be brand conflicting. We'll be doing some testing on this in the near future and definitely taking on this type of feedback 🙂

This commit removes the "Help" menu item and adds a userhelp, docs, community and feedback help menu to the south toolbar.
When the cms-menu is closed the SS logo shows in the cms-menu header and the new help menu is removed.
Includes changes to the cms version badge and content that is displayed.
The help links are also configurable making it easy for agencies to remove or add their own.
Also addresses a fix for the mobile menu toggle functionality.

Resolves: https://github.com/silverstripe/silverstripe-admin/issues/500|#500

To do: Update badge-info in separate PR.
Update https://userhelp.silverstripe.org/en/4/managing_your_website/overview/#help|https://userhelp.silverstripe.org/en/4/managing_your_website/overview/#help user help.

Feedback would be much appreciated :slightly_smiling_face:

@Terry Apodaca for validation for your client as you said they were asking 🙂

Terry Apodaca

Question, why was it take away in the first place? you have to know that clients like to customize things like this...

robbieaverill

hey @Terry Apodaca - if you want to customise the icon you can override http://LeftAndMain_MenuToggle.ss in your app/templates dir

robbieaverill

you can override http://LeftAndMain_MenuLogo.ss if you want to change the one in the top left

Terry Apodaca

@robbieaverill thanks! I was referencing the one at the top (left) that seems to be removed now in SS4.3.*

robbieaverill

this is the same as it was in SilverStripe 3.x, so we haven't removed any customisability with these new things

Terry Apodaca

in SS3 and even SS4.2 you could simply replace the logo with CSS, like so:

  1. .cms-sitename .cms-sitename__link,
  2. .font-icon-silverstripe:before { background: url(../img/logo-24x24.png) no-repeat 50%; }
  3. .font-icon-silverstripe:before { content: " "; }
robbieaverill

if you want to do that you could still do it, you might just need to adjust the class names a little

Terry Apodaca

also, when the panel is expanded, the logo is display:none;

Terry Apodaca

I had to switch to another task, but I was close to getting it to work

robbieaverill

it sounds like you're relying on CSS to remove the SS logo (which is a font icon) - you'd be best to override the template and customise it as much as you want to

Terry Apodaca

right...I'm really not trying to make a big deal out of this...it just seems like SS over complicates things like this...but I'll get it figured out

robbieaverill

sorry - we're not trying to make things complicated, but you can easily customise the admin UI by overriding templates 🙂

robbieaverill

side note: if you really want to do it with CSS i'm sure you could

robbieaverill

i can spend five mins playing around if you want

robbieaverill

ok there's a bunch of styles under @media (min-width: 768px) .cms-menu.collapsed .cms-sitename .cms-sitename__link { that you'll need to replicate to have it show uncollapsed too

Yeah you can override the template or add some css to change the icon, in the same way that you would to the current functionality with the logo at the top. The main reason for moving the logo to the bottom was to disconnect the SilverStripe brand so it doesn’t conflict with the users website name.

sachajudd

The links are configurable 🙂 We've had some good conversations with users of the CMS who actually find the developer docs more insightful for limitations of the CMS.

Under the Blocks section, what is the Layout Block?

Jared Lee

Hey Jason, “Layout blocks” are a type of content block, which is designed to gave users an extra layer of customisation (defined by their developer). Think of them as mini-templates within a page, that can house their own content blocks. This may look like two column layout for example.

korthjp17

is this something to replace the ElementList module?

clarkepaul

It hasn’t been built yet but it would probably be built as a new block type, so devs could still choose whats more appropriate. The layout block takes a slightly different approach in quite a few aspects but yes they are trying to achieve a similar thing. Users can build template structures to place their blocks, they can apply style variants.

korthjp17

I think we'll definitely be interested to see how that looks when it's built. We're using ElementList quite a bit now to do different layout options in the CMS to add flexibility
